One reel to reel. Interview with Caminero-Beheit about hammock making. She discusses learning to make hammocks; the processes used; state of the art in Venezuela; time needed; use of hammocks; and Venezuelan children's games. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, she lived as a housewife and made hammocks on the side. For a sample textile that she made in the images can be found in S 1628, box 1, folder 10. Images of her making the sample can be found in S 1577, v. 43 S87-918 - S87-930. Description
One reel-to-reel. Landa, an actor with Miami's Pro Teatro Cubano, discusses bufo theater, a ribald and satirical form of Cuban musical theater with stock figures imitating stereotypes. Bufo theater was often performed in Havana before Fidel Castro came to power. Landa discusses playing the stock character of "El Negrito," a trickster figure who worked for Gallego, a Spanish businessman. He discusses the origins of bufo theater, types of bufo characters and audiences, various bufo performers and playwrights, and bufo actors and productions in Miami. Description
Seven color slides. Images are dark. Bert was born approximately in 1925. She spoke little English. She made coiled sweetgrass baskets. Used newer grass, using cotton thread. She made basket bottoms out of palmetto fiber. The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Fragos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.
