Description: Seven reel-to-reel audiotapes. Recording of a conversation and impromptu performance by Brown and Williams. This was the first time these men had met. They discuss gospel, country, rock and roll, and blues music; women; segregation; other folk festivals; various jobs they worked; and performing. They perform several songs. The audio quality varies from poor to fair throughout. Copied onto audiocassettes C81-12, C81-13 and C81-14.

Claude Sheppard interview for the North Florida Folklife Project

Date: 1978-05-03
Description: One audio cassette. Sheppard discusses how he began to braid whips and gives step-by-step instructions for starting whips. He also talks about his knowledge of Florida history and the use of the whip in Florida history, his trademark, his whip acts, and an accident driving cattle. Sheppard then discusses the origins of the term "Florida Cracker," talks about brindles and Conway buckles, and demonstrates how to braid a whip.

Williams are copied from T78-326, recorded May 28, 1978; "Trot Along, My Honey" copied from T78-322, recorded April 22, 1978; "Angel Band" copied from T78-350, recorded October 29, 1978; "Wade in the Water" copied from T78-318, recorded April 16, 1978.

Ella Mae Huffman interview for the North Florida Folklife Project

Description: One audio cassette. Huffman discusses the materials she uses to create the baskets, talks about the first steps used in creating the baskets, demonstrates fastening the needles together, talks about learning the craft in grade school, explains the application of shellac, and tells how long it takes to complete a basket. She also discusses life and her family's background.

Frank Mitchell interview for the North Florida Folklife Project

Date: 1978-05-02
Description: One reel-to-reel recording. Mitchell, born in Greensboro, Alabama, first moved to Florida in 1949. Eventually, he was hired by Capells Shoe Store to shine (and later repair) shoes. Florida Folk Festival director Thelma Boltin discovered him in the early 1970s, and he performed at several festivals thereafter. He does not sing (he usually has a harmonica player accompany him) but rather creates a syncopated beat with his rag. In the interview, he discusses his early life, moving to Florida, working at the shoe store, performing his shoe shine rag, and gives examples of his skill.

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2021-22, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $561,960. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
