1992 Florida Folk Heritage Award ceremony for the Versiteers

Description
Audio cassette recording. Approximately one hour. The Versiteers were a black gospel a capella singing group. They consisted of Harry Mae Anthony, Artie Brooks, Myrtle Barton, L.V. Starling, and Belinda Carter. The recording was made at the New Berlin Baptist Church during a ceremony awarding the Versiteers the Florida Folk Heritage Award for 1992. The recording includes the awards ceremony, as well as church services and gospel singing. Performers include The Versiteers, The Harbor Lights, Rev. Marcus King, and the New St. James Choir. Included in the folder is a recording log listing all the songs and speakers. See also S 1723, box 1 for photographs of the ceremony.

Description
One reel to reel recording. Fitchen served as emcee. Cook apprenticed under fiddler Custer in 1990 through the FFP Apprenticeship program. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2003.

Description
Three DAT tapes. Digital audio tapes (DAT) generated by fieldwork undertaken to document the folklife of the Callahan neighborhood of Orlando, Florida. Results of the fieldwork were incorporated into the "Folklife Of Central Florida" folklife theme area at the 1994 Florida Folk Festival. The tapes feature African-American hymn lining and blues, folk tales, and children's games. Images of the project can be found in folder 1.

One digital audio tape (DAT). Clark served as emcee. Two Hits and a Miss featured Marge Hill (bass), Robert Hall (banjo), and Ned Hugh Bass (fiddle). They were from St. Cloud. The Neighborhood Blues Band featured Chip Luck, Evan Waller, and Odell Maxwell. Mt. Pleasant Choir were based out of Orlando. Grupo Sevezz did not perform as scheduled.

One compact disc. A hymn lining workshop, led by Troy Demps (of Live Oak) with Splading and Robinson. Folklorist Stone introduced the singers. Hymn lining, which began in the 1700s, involves the leader signing a line, and the congregation repeats it.

Description
Two audio DAT tapes. Grace was a gospel singing group that consisted of Reynolds, Scott, and Witherspoon-Hackley, all of whom were at the time Folklife Program Apprentices under Starling. Master artist Starling is also featured. Also pictured are other unidentified African American gospel groups performing. The Jacksonville Arts Mania Festival began in 1966 and was held annually until 1994. It was a multi-day festival held in the fall either in late September or early October. It had a multitude of activities including visual arts, a film festival, folklife demonstrations, theater and music, a Kid's Korner, and senior citizens' activities. In 1990, it was held at the Jacksonville Landing. Images of the performances can be found in S 1669, box 1, folders 1 and 2.
