In the solo awards, the placements were Fred Stoll (fourth), David Forbes (third), Elan Chalford (second), and Willie Jones(first). For the Accompanied category, the placements were Willie Jones (fourth), Clare Davis (third), Tom Staley (second) and Wayne Martin (first). Etheridge, Barasch, and Rtuland were the judges; and Kelly was a guest performer.

Recordings of the 1984 Suwannee River Jamboree (First Day)

Description: Thirteen reel to reel recordings. Recordings of the first day of the 1984 Suwannee River Jamboree homecoming held at the Stephen Foster State Cultural Center, the first reunion to celebrate the original Live Oak-produced radio program of the same name. The concert included music performances, recounted stories, a recreation of a radio program, and clog dancing. Folklorist Blanton Owen, a renowned old-time musician, hosted the event. Between 1952 and 1959, the Suwannee River Jamboree radio show -- broadcast from Live Oak, Florida on WNER -- was Florida's largest and best known country music show. It was broadcast live three hours every Saturday night, with 30-minute versions syndicated across the Southeast. The show featured many North Florida and Southeast acts such as the Stanley Brothers, Jim and Jesse McReynolds, the White Springs Ramblers, and Clare Parker, as well as nationally famous guests such as Ernest Tubb, Grandpa Jones, and Ferlin Husky. The concert in these recordings was held in 1985 as a homecoming for the original radio series, and included several local bluegrass bands. Description: One audio cassette. Baird served as emcee. The Florida State Fiddle Contest was held each year at the Festival on Saturdays (the stages varied from year to year). The winners were allowed to perform on the Main Stage that evening. The contest opened with the Omaha String Band (Baird, Dave Moreland, Lloyd Baldwin, and Bill Barton), followed by the various competition categories, and concluded with the judges performing Soldiers Joy. The judges were Stapleton, Robertson, and Brophy.

Description: One digital audio tape (DAT). Paine served as emcee. The Celestial Railroad consisted of Lo Gordon (banjo), Mary Gordon (guitar), Matt Gardner (bass), and Tim Gardner (fiddle). Steel guitarist McCormick lived in Defuniak Springs. Street vendor-guitarist Walton was from St. Petersburg. Accordionist Gianaros lived in Tarpon Springs. Walton, McCormick and Gianaros were all 1994 Florida Folk Heritage Award Winners. Paine played between sets, first on mandolin with guitarist Dave Dowling; then with Dia Browning (fiddle), Schmidt (banjo), and Peter Martin (dulcimer). Fiddler Baldwin played with Dave Massey (guitar), Marrietta Massey (banjo), Dwight Devane (fiddle), David Borland (guitar), and Bill martin (fiddle/banjo). Their performances continued on D94-27.

Florida Memory is a digital outreach program providing free online access to select archival records from collections housed in the State Library and Archives of Florida. Florida Memory digitizes materials that illuminate the state's history and culture.

Additional Links

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2022-23, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $646,422. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
