Description
One reel to reel recording. The audio quality is poor. Held at Powell Hall because of heavy rains. Boltin emceed the event. Cliff Walden was a radio personality on WGGG in Gainesville. U.S. Rep. Matthews represented the 8th Congressional District from 1953 to 1967. He spoke on patriotism and the need for "states rights" -- but his speech suffers from audio resulting from damage to the reel to reel and is difficult to hear.

Description
One reel to reel. (Copied onto an unnumbered audio cassette in S 1576, box 41). These recordings were created during John and Ruby Lomax's 1939 recording trip through the South. Touring eleven states, the husband and wife team gathered material for the Library of Congress's Archive of the American Folk Song (today the Archive of Folk Culture in the American Folklife Center). They were not working for the WPA at the time, as is sometimes thought; but they visited two of the same sites they recorded at during their 1936-1937 WPA trip to Florida. In these recordings the Lomaxes visited the Florida State Prison at Raiford in Union County (June 2-5). They recorded a total of 63 songs on acetate discs in Florida (the entire trip netted a full 267 discs, with over 600 titles). For more detailed information on the recordings, see S 1579, box 3, for copies of the original LOC indexes. In 1986, the FFP staff made copies of many of these recordings onto reel to reels for inclusion to the Florida Folklife Archive. The originals are still housed with the Library of Congress.

Description
Two audio cassettes. Recording of an evening church service, including gospel music, prayers, sermons, Bible readings, and lining out. Much of the signing was accompanied by drums, tambourine, and piano. Several children sang. Often hard to hear due to noise of congregation.

Description
Six reel to reel recordings. The convention was founded in 1928, and performs four times a year. Shaped Note singing was an a capella style of church music that utilized shapes to represent notes (fa-so-la-mi) for untrained and even illiterate church members. Only four notes were used in the hymns. An old Anglican practice, English colonists first brought the tradition over to North American in the 1600s. These are field recordings from the Florida Record Project. That project, along with work for the North Florida Project, resulted in the two-album recording, Drop On Down in Florida.

One digital audio tape (DAT). Williams served as emcee. The first three songs the Versiteers played (not listed here) were not recorded due to equipment failure. Mortham was Secretary of State at the time; the Florida Folklife Program and festival fell under her jurisdiction. She officially recognized McLean as a Florida Artist. This was followed by a McLean tribute, including stories and performances by Southwind, Fitchen, Frank & Ann Thomas, Kennedy, Todd, and Williams. Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the 'Father of Florida Folk.' The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname for the hat he usually wore, authored over 3500 songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. A fifth generation Floridian, he died in 1990, the year after he won the Florida Folk Heritage award. Grooms played with Dennis Devine (guitar), Waye Martin (fiddle), Dan Peterson (bass) among others.
