Jerry and the Singing Goffs performing at the Bostwick Baptist Church

Date
1985-01-31
Description
Two audio cassettes. Performing at the Bostwick Baptist Church. Gospel songwriter, singer, and musician Jerry Goff was born in Greenwood, SC, and today is often called "Mr. Gospel Trumpet." He worked in television in the 1960s, including with the Gospel Singing Caravan. In the 1970s and 1980s, he traveled across the South with his band, the Singing Goffs, with whom he released several albums. They represenetd the USA at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 2002, he was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Association. In winter 1985, the Bureau contracted with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the 'St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area' at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.
