Friday morning performances at the 1971 Florida Folk Festival (Main Stage)

Date

Description
One reel to reel recording. NOTE: Due to technical problems with the original reels the recording quality of the 1971 Florida Folk Festival is exceptionally poor. Boltin served as emcee. (The last five tracks of the reel -- not listed here -- are from the Friday afternoon program. See separate entry for description.) The first few tracks may have been from the previous day's program (Thursday, 6 May, 1971). The reel indexes are unclear. The Schillings were from Cosby, Tennessee. Jean played dulcimer. The Orange Blossom Bluegrass were from Tampa. Nelson lived in Gainesville. Pavitt lived in Juneau, Alaska. The Good Guys were based out of West Palm Beach. Fiddler Stephens lived in Panama City. Starker played the steel drums.

Description
One reel to reel recording. Boltin served as emcee. Smith and Gavin were boat drivers at Wakulla Springs. Boat tours have been given at the springs on since the late 1800s. Many of the 1980s drivers were descendents of those early drivers, and provide some of the same folk tales. The springs was developed as a tourist attraction in the 1930s (and became a Florida state park in 1987.) Images of the drivers can be found in S 1577, v. 7. The Makley Family were from Jacksonville. Older was a fiddler from Lake Hamilton. Wind That Shakes the Barley band were from Tampa. Schuman, of Gainesville, played the autoharp (chorded zither).
