Description
Two reel to reels. (NOTE -- no duplications can be made of the recording. It can only be listened to by patrons for research purposes.) Recording of a free concert at the Stephen Foster Center by the then recently-reformed reformed New Christy Minstrels. The event was sponsored by the Florida Folklife Program. The group first formed in Tarzana, California in 1961 by Randy Sparks emerging out of the folk revival scene. Armed with a Columbia Records recording contract, the ten-member group soon became a popular folk-music group, appearing often on television and concert venues. Focusing on traditional, positive folk songs, the band proved a counter-point to the activist nature of other early-1960s folk acts. The line-up changed often, with even founder Sparks leaving in 1965. The group disbanded in 1971, but re-formed with an entirely different line-up in 1976. By the 2000s, the group still performed regularly, often with old members such as Barry McGuire and founder Sparks.

One reel to reel recording. Boltin served as emcee. Malkine was from Shady, New York. Lazonby was from Hawthorne. Gerard and Kershner was from Lake City. The Kellys were from Palatka. Skip Johns and his band were from Lake City, and Waddell hailed from Jacksonville. Williamson was from Palatka. Frog Smith told stories, and was from Fort Myers. Whatley, of Bell, sang country music. Bullard lived in White Springs. Hancock played the mouth harp and was from Suffolk, Virginia. The Beseda Dancers were from the Czechoslovakian American community Masaryktown. The Caney were from Cookeville, Tennessee. Bessie Jones and Frankie Quimby, both of Brunswick, Georgia, later became known as the Georgia Sea Island Singers. Moore sang ballads, and lived in Green Cove Springs.

One reel to reel recording. Fitchen served as emcee. Red played guitar, and Murphy the mandolin and the banjo. Their performance began on T87-58. Red and Murphy began as Red and Murphy and Co., who performed in the Southeast between 1975 and 1987. The bluegrass group consists of Red Henry on guitar and mandolin, and his wife Murphy Henry on banjo (and the group's songwriter), as well as two of Murphy's sisters -- Argen Hicks and Nancy Hicks. All members sang harmony. Based out of Hawthorne, Florida, Red was from North Florida, while the sisters were all Georgia natives. The group performed at the 1978 and 1987 Florida Folk Festival. After that, they performed as a duo. By the late 1990s, Murphy was a renowned banjo instructor, and Red toured with their son Chris.
