Description
Three audio cassettes. Recording of a bluegrass picking session at Charles Kendrick's home. Musicians included: Frank Trivette Sr. (fiddle, banjo), Ebby Johns (fiddle), Henry Brown (guitar), Doug Trivette (guitar), Shorty McDaniels (guitar), Charles Kendricks (mandolin), and Frank Trivette Jr.(guitar). For images, see S 1577, v. 27, slides 1903-1937. In winter 1985, the Bureau joined with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the 'St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area' at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.

One audio cassette. Recording of well-known fiddler Fred Perry playing his repertoire of old fiddle tunes. He is joined by Doug and Frank Trivette. Perry has played in the St. Johns region for over fifty years, including with bluegrass great Ralph Stanley. Also on the tape is Fred's wife Ruby. One digital audio tape(DAT). The Versiteers, a Jacksonville-based a capella gospel group, consisted of L.V. Starling, Linda Carter, and Myrtle Butler. Law and Wako Kai of Pensacola danced to pre-recorded music. Jose Silva of Pembroke Pines led the Nicaraguan dance group Toco Huaco. Tru-Blu Grass consisted of Bill Hendry (fiddle), Jane Roynl (bass), Eddie Knight (guitar), Jack Piccalo (banjo) and Ken Carey (mandolin).

Two reel to reel recordings. Blackwelder began fiddling at 18, a self-taught musician. Born in 1910 in Bradford County, he was in the citrus business. His influences included Chubby Wise and Broward Green. In the recordings, Blackwelder discusses his life and fiddling styles. He plays several fiddle tunes.
