Fourth of July celebrations at Stephen Foster Memorial (1964)

Date: 1964-07-04
Description: Boltin served as emcee for the event. The event was held inside the bell tower due to unexpected rain. The Big Bend Musicians were Frank Noegel (on a home-made banjo), Dr. John Green, Claude Bedenbaugh, and Fred Jones. Carol Epperson sang as a substitute for her ill mother. And she played piano for Pursley, making his Stephen Foster memorial debut. McMullen was a member of the Stephen Foster Memorial Commission as well as the Hamilton County Chamber of Commerce and former White Springs mayor. In 1998 he received a Florida Folk Heritage Award from the Florida Dept. of State.

Description: Two reel to reel recordings. The band consisted of Goose Culbreath (fiddle), Lloyd Culbreath (guitar/banjo), and Richard Culbreath (guitar). Traditional Methods of Finding Fish workshop: Folklorist Taylor interviewed the fishers (Buzier of Apalachicola with Singleton of Mayport and Noles of Crescent City) about how they find fish; navigating their boats; their geographical knowledge; and getting lost. The folklife area in 1987 focused on Maritime folklife, which stemmed from Taylor's work on the 1986 Maritime Heritage Project, and cooperative project between the FFP and the Library of Congress.

Description: Two reel to reel recordings. Blackwelder began fiddling at 18, a self-taught musician. Born in 1910 in Bradford County, he was in the citrus business. His influences included Chubby Wise and Broward Green. In the recordings, Blackwelder discusses his life and fiddling styles. He plays several fiddle tunes.

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2022-23, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $646,422. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
