Some of the administrative files in the series relate to Dr. Joseph Yates Porter, the first State Health Officer. He served in this position from 1889 to 1917. Besides his service to the Board, the material also covers his duties as Sanitary Inspector for the Port of Key West and as Federal Quarantine Officer at the United States Public Health and Marine Hospital Service for Key West. The series covers such diverse public health topics as yellow fever, communicable diseases, tuberculosis hospitals, quarantines, sanitation, veterinary public health, and child welfare.
