A 19 year old boy was caught in an undertow just south of the Main St. pier, Daytona Beach. Lt. Lynn D. Merrill responded to the outcry and took off with passenger Archie Kass, intending to drop a life preserver. As Merrill banked a wing tip caught a wave, the Jenny cartwheeled into the ocean. Miraculously, neither man was hurt. The boy, the passenger, the pilot and the plane were towed to shore and lifeguards revived the boy.
After several public drives for funds, $2000 was raised for a new plane. Six months later Merrill was killed when he could not recover from a dive.
