Accompanying note: A New York harbor pilot boat purchased by U.S. government in 1839 for surveying. It served as the flagship of the Mosquito Fleet during the 2nd Seminole War. Later purchased by General James Gadsden in 1851, and for 2 years it carried his goods between St. Marks/Newport and South Carolina. Gadsden sold the Flirt when he went to Mexico for the Gadsden purchase.
