General Note

  • Hale Smith was the chairman of the FSU Anthropology Department. He conducted several excavations throughout the state and the southeast. He published along with John Griffin the landmark book "Here They Once Stood", a 1951 study of Spanish missions in Florida, focusing primarily upon Mission San Luis.
  • Atlatl is Indian for weapon. The term is actually a Nahua (Aztec) word for the spear like tool that extends one's length in order to hurl a stone or other projectile at a target. The function is very similar to the way a slingshot works. It was first used by PaleoIndians (North America's first peoples) including in Florida.
