Biographical Note
Born on August 25, 1875, Hazel was a Madison County doctor who owned a saw, grist and shingle mill. He also owned a dairy business and a country store. Dr. Harrell opposed smallpox vaccinations as unsafe, was often paid for his medical services in collard greens and went bankrupt during the Depression. Hazel Washington Harrell died of pneumonia on April 20, 1931. Upon his death his widow, Nanny Seleta Arnold Harrell was unable to collect debts from more prosperous patients.
