General Note
Contemporary account: "The city of Fernandina ... is situated on the inner or western shore of Amelia Island, and at the mouth of [the] Amelia River which divides it from the main land.... As is [the case with] most Florida towns, the roadways are composed of deep sand.... The sidewalks are mostly shell or macadamized. There is a good shell road leading from the Main Street to the ocean beach, two miles." -- D. Webster Dixon to the St. Albans Messenger, December, 1875.
