General Note/Comment

  • One digital audio tape (DAT). Monroe, a mandolin player, was known as the creator of bluegrass style of music with his band, the Bluegrass Boys (where the name for the musical genre derives from.) He was often called the Father of Bluegrass. For images of his performance, see S 1577, box 15, folder 2. For his main stage performance later that evening, see D93-11/12. Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships. The winners for 1993 were wood carver Bobby Johns, fiddler Willie Jones, guitarist-singer Gamble Rogers, and songwriters-singers Frank & Ann Thomas.
