General Note/Comment

  • One digital audio tape (DAT). Matthews, filling for Secretary of State Katherine Harris, was director of the Division of Historic Resources (within which the Florida Folklife Program was located). She announced all winners. The 2000 Heritage awards went to Joseph Kilgore (Dade City cast net maker) and Joe Zeytoonian (of Margate, Fl, oud player). The winners of the State Fiddlers Competition were Brett Watkins, first place; Emma Harbit, second place; and Lee Staley, third place [Junior division]; Denise Peterson, first place; Trent Watkins, second place; and Joshua Headley, third place [Contemporary division); Cathy Agar and Ian Malinowski, first place; Sharon Hartman & Andy Thomas,s econd place; and Debbie Zanders & George Leedham, third place [Twin fiddle); and Sharon Hartman, first place [Rrustic fiddle). Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships. The Florida State Fiddle Contest was held each year at the Festival on Saturdays (the stages varied from year to year). The winners were announced on the Main Stage that evening.
