General Note/Comment

  • One reel to reel recording. Fitchen served as emcee. Billed as Will McLean and friends, their performance concludes on T87-56. McLean played with Dinella (guitar), Jemison (bass), and Ballew (guitar). McLean dedicated the new song Florida Sky to Thelma Boltin, and Oh Margaret to his new bride. Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the 'Father of Florida Folk.' The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname for the hat he usually wore, authored over 3500 songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. A fifth generation Floridian, he died in 1990, the year after he won the Florida Folk Heritage award. This was Ballew's last performance at the Florida Folk Festival. He died on 13 August 1987. Banjoist Tammy Murray played with Turner, Paine, and fiddler Martin.
