  • Florida's 39th Governor, John Wayne Mixson was born June 16, 1922 in New Brockton, Alabama. A Florida resident since 1941, Governor Mixson enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served in a blimp unit. After attending Columbia University in New York and the Wharton School of Finance in Philadelphia, he graduated with honors in 1947 from the University of Florida. Respected nationally as an agribusiness expert, Governor Mixson owns a 2,000-acre farm near Marianna. He was elected in 1967 to the Florida House of Representatives, and served for 12 years as a leader in education and agriculture legislation. He became Florida's 12th Lieutenant Governor in 1978 as the running mate of Bob Graham. In 1982, he became the first Florida Lieutenant Governor elected to consecutive terms, and served from 1983-1987 as Secretary of the Florida Department of Commerce. He is married to Margie Grace of Graceville.
