Born April 15, 1871, Brilla was the seventh child of Nelson and Maria Burton. She grew up in Manatee and Cedar key. Educated at Cookman Institute, Jacksonville, Florida. She taught in Hillsboro County for three years. Married in Tarpon Springs, January 19, 1891 to Reverend James S. Braswell. Lived in Tarpon Springs until James' ministry took him to Clearwater. An accomplished dressmaker and milliner with successful businesses in Ocala, Orlando and Palatka.
