  • Accompanying note: "Born near Panama City but grew up in Pensacola, orphaned in infancy, lived with a poor family that traveled to sawmill towns in search of jobs. She was a reporter, owned a cosmetics firm and became a test pilot. First woman to break the sound barrier, first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic, first civilian woman to win a Distinguished Service Medal. Elected to the Aviation Hall of Fame. At her death in 1980, she held more speed, altitude and distance records than any other pilot. Women's Hall of Fame inductee 1992."--neg. sleeve.

    Biography Note

  • Born May 11, 1906, Jacqueline Cochran was a pioneer American aviator, considered to be one of the most gifted racing pilots of her generation. She was an important contributor to the formation of the wartime Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). She died on August 9, 1980.
