Born on May 14, 1936 and died on June 17, 1987. After playing baseball at FSU he signed with the Kansas City Athletics and played in the major leagues for eight years. Dick Howser then became third base coach for the New York Yankees and after 11 years returned to coach at Florida State University. After success as the Seminoles' head coach he was named to manage the New York Yankees and later was hired by the Kansas City Royals to be their skipper. Howser led the Royals to their World Series title in 1985 before illness forced him to retire in 1986.
