He was born in Effingham County, Georgia on December 26, 1818.Served as private with Lieutenant Whitfield's detachment of Georgia militia in 1840 and in Captain Redding's Company of the first Florida Mounted Militia Regiment in 1841 in the Second Seminole War. Enrolled on August 17, 1863 and served until the end of the war as a private with Campbell's Independent Georgia Seige Artillery at Fort Ward, Saint Marks. Paroled at Thomasville, Georgia on May 10, 1865.
Married Martha Ann Welch in Thomas County, Georgia on December 31, 1843. She died January 4, 1905 and John remarried to Liday Husky on July 19, 1905. He died January 9, 1913. Children include: John Henry Haven, Green Berry Haven and Mary Ann Haven.
