Collections Pertaining to Women's History and Women's Issues from the State Archives of Florida
WOMEN'S RIGHTS
These collections consist of government records, audio and videotapes, and
personal papers concerning women's rights, including voting rights, the Equal
Rights Amendment, equal employment opportunities for women, and related issues.

M82-11 Florida
Women's Conference.
Videotape, 1977. 1 videotape.
This collection consists of a videotape of the proceedings in Orlando of the
first Florida Women's Conference. The conference celebrated the International
Women's Year of 1975. Especially noteworthy is the debate between pro- and
anti- Equal Rights Amendment factions.

Audrey Finkelstein Interview with Roxcy Bolton, 1977. 1 audiotape cassette.
This collection consists of an audiotape of an interview with Roxcy Bolton,
founder of the Dade County chapter of the National Organization for Women.
A leading advocate for women's rights and an organizer of women's groups and
services in Florida, Bolton discusses the history of the women's movement in
Dade County. For more material on Roxcy Bolton, see series M94-1 below.
M87-39 Francis Arlington (F. Arlie) Rhodes (1908-1988).
Papers, 1950-1980. 3.25 cubic feet
F. Arlie Rhodes was a prominent educator in Florida. This collection contains
audiotapes of his lectures on the history of Leon County, including a talk
entitled "Florida Women Get the Right to Vote."
M94-1 Roxcy
O'Neal Bolton (b. 1926).
Papers, 1960-1994. 6.25 cubic feet
Roxcy O'Neal Bolton is a leading advocate for women's rights in Florida. Included
in her many projects was the organization of Florida's chapter of the National
Organization for Women; the founding of Women in Distress, a program to assist
women in personal crisis; and the development of the Rape Treatment Center
at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. This collection contains her subject
files, clippings, correspondence, photographs, and videotapes. It documents
Bolton's fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, the above-mentioned projects,
her work in the struggle for women's rights, and her local and national recognition

The Florida Commission on the Status of Women is charged with investigating
issues affecting women such as women's rights, equal opportunity employment
and affirmative action. The series consists of subject files, reference files,
audio and videotapes, meeting files, correspondence, and publications.

Records, 1969-1976, 1.00 cubic feet
The Florida Commission on Human Relations promotes fair treatment and equal
opportunity for all persons in Florida and seeks resolution of claims of discriminatory
treatment, including sexual discrimination. This series consists of program
proposals, meeting minutes and agendas, correspondence, press releases, and
other materials documenting the Commission's position on and activities in
civil rights matters, including affirmative action, equal opportunity employment,
and job discrimination.

Subject Files, 1940-1946. 31.00 cubic feet
The goal of this World War II era council was total defense preparedness for
Florida. The Defense Council was involved in the war effort in areas such as
material resources, labor, civil protection, education, and morale. The series
includes correspondence, scrapbooks, reports, and publications that document
the military service and civilian defense activities of Florida women.

This series documents the administration of equal employment opportunity policies
and programs and the investigation of reports of job discrimination in Florida.
Documents include correspondence, reports, reference materials, and program
data.

Minutes, 1941-1945. .25 cubic feet
This series consists of the minutes of Defense Council meetings. The minutes
document the role of numerous women as leaders on the Council as well as the
military service and civilian defense activities of Florida women.

1205 State Defense Council.
Posters, 1942-1944. 100 items.
Among the posters contained in this series are many regarding women and the
war effort. These include military recruitment posters targeting women and
posters outlining other opportunities for women to contribute to the war effort
on the home front.
