Collections Pertaining to Women's History and Women's Issues from the State Archives of Florida
PUBLIC LIFE
These collections consist primarily of the papers of public officials,
prominent professionals, and other leading women. See also Part IV, Women's
Rights, for the papers of Roxcy O'Neal Bolton, leading women's rights activist
in Florida. See also Part VII, Governors' Records, for the papers of Florida's
First Ladies.
M74-60 Sara
Dillingham Alberson.
Scrapbooks, 1946-1974. 2 volumes.
Sara Alberson was a home economist, editor and author, and sportswoman who
held several public positions in Florida, including Executive Secretary of
the Eustis Chamber of Commerce and Florida's Home Economist. She encouraged
the participation of women in organized sports and was an activist for the
conservation of Florida's natural resources. Her scrapbooks contain clippings,
photographs, recipes, and correspondence.

McCollough Johnson (1909-1973).
Papers, 1957-1970. 9.00 cubic feet
Beth McCollough Johnson was the first woman to serve in the Florida Senate.
She held several other public positions over the course of her career and was
a delegate to the 1952 Democratic National Convention. As a Senator, Johnson
had special interest in mental health issues and reapportionment. This collection
consists of both business and personal papers.

Fisher Smith (d. 1977).
Papers, 1898-1899, 1935-1977. 1.50 cubic feet
Elizabeth Fisher Smith was the founder of the magazine Magnolia Monthly which
covered the history and news of Wakulla County and north Florida. Her papers
include diaries, stories, scrapbooks, correspondence, and essays.

The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Site sits on the home and acreage
of the writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (Cross Creek, The Yearling). These scrapbooks,
the originals of which are maintained by the Historic Site, contain articles,
photographs and clippings related to the author's life, work and home.

Forbes.
Papers, 1931-1965. 2.50 cubic feet
Juanita Forbes worked for the Florida Securities Commission and served as
Secretary of the North American Securities Administrators during the 1950s
and 1960s. This collection contains correspondence, minutes, photographs, financial
reports, legislative materials, and conference materials related to her duties
as Secretary.

Ann Boltin (1904-1992).
Papers, 1955-1978. 2.00 cubic feet
Thelma Ann Boltin, "The Queen of Florida Folklife," was a nationally-recognized
folklorist and the director of the Stephen Foster Memorial Folk Festival in
White Springs, Florida. The collection consists of Boltin's correspondence,
memorabilia, clippings, poetry, plays, and scrapbooks.

of Bobbie M. James, Republican Historian (1967-1980), 1923-1978. 9.00 cubic
feet
Bobbie James served as the first Historian of the Florida Republican State
Committee. The collection documents her role as Historian as well as the activities
and history of the Republican State Committee. It includes reports, clippings,
correspondence, publications, and scrapbooks.

Press Files, 1944-1981. 8.00 cubic feet
Barbara L. Frye served as Tallahassee Bureau Manager for United Press International
from 1944 to 1982. This collection contains her articles with background materials.
They primarily concern national and local elections and the Florida Legislature.

on Mary McLeod Bethune, ca. 1890-1960. 1.00 cubic feet
Mary McLeod Bethune was nationally recognized as an educator and civil rights
leader. She founded the National Council of Negro Women and Daytona Normal
and Industrial School for Negro Girls in Daytona Beach, which later merged
with the Cookman Institute to become Bethune-Cookman College. This collection
consists of photographs, biographical pieces, interview transcripts, letters,
and other materials related to Mary McLeod Bethune, Bethune-Cookman College,
and the Council for Negro Women.

This collection consists of the papers of Eunice Liberty of Dade County, a
leader in education and civil rights. She worked to educate people on Mary
McLeod Bethune and African American history and was a leader in the National
Council of Negro Women. The series includes newspaper clippings, correspondence,
photographs, and records relating to the National Council of Negro Women.

Barbara Newell was the first woman state university chancellor in the United
States. These two series relate to her travels as Chancellor and to her duties
as the chief administrator of the Board of Regents and administrator of the
State University System of Florida. The series include reports, agendas, subject
files, and correspondence.

Secretary Adis M. Vila Speeches, 1987-1989. 1.00 cubic feet
Adis M. Vila, a Cuban-born American citizen, graduated from the University
of Florida Law School and has held high-level positions with the U.S. Departments
of Commerce and State. She also worked in the White House Office of Public
Liaison and was a practicing lawyer before being appointed Secretary of the
Florida Department of Administration. This series consists of speeches delivered
while she was Secretary. Background materials for the speeches are also included.

Commissioner of Education Betty Castor Administrative Files, 1987-1991. 67.00

Betty Castor, as Commissioner of Education, was the first woman elected to
the Florida Cabinet. She served from 1987 to 1994, when she resigned to become
President of the University of South Florida. She also served as a state senator.
This series documents Castor's role as a Cabinet member and as the chief educational
officer of Florida. The files consist of memoranda, correspondence, clippings,
reports, and other materials.

State Librarian Dorothy Dodd Correspondence, 1961-1965. 1.00 cubic feet
Dorothy Dodd served as the first Florida State Archivist and the second State
Librarian. She also worked as a reporter and teacher and wrote extensively
on Florida history. These series document her role and duties as State Librarian
and State Archivist. They also record her development of a collection of Floridiana
and of historical materials on Florida at the State Archives and State Library.
The series contain correspondence, reference materials, subject files, and
other related documents.
