The Collection

This collection contains documents from two series, S 49 (Supreme Court cases) and M87-20 (Papers concerning the will of Zephaniah Kingsley, 1844, 1846). A complete copy of the will can be found at the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library. The State Archives of Florida does not have Zephaniah Kingsley’s original will. The Archives does have, in Supreme Court case _Kingsley et al v. Broward et al, 1886_ (Series 49, Carton 470),  a handwritten copy of the record of the case from the lower court, which includes the will; it consists of eight pages.

Summary:
The collection contains two documents concerning the contesting of Zephaniah Kingsley's will. Included is the petition to the will made by Martha McNeill and others to Judge Farquhar Bethune, filed November 30, 1844. The other document is the executors' response (Benjamin A. Putnam and Kingsley B. Gibbs) to the petition of Anna M. J. Kingsley, widow of Zephaniah Kingsley. The response is dated September 5, 1846.
