Flag Day

Flag presented to Governor E.A. Perry at his inauguration in 1885

This flag, held by Mena E. Williams, was made of silk and presented to Governor E.A. Perry at his inauguration in 1885. The material came from Ellen Call Long of Tallahassee. She raised silk worms under the front porch of her family home, known as The Grove. In addition to silkworm culture, Ellen grew vegetables and rented out rooms in order to retain ownership of her family home.

The Grove, Tallahassee, ca. 1874. The windows under the porch may have provided warmth for silkworm culture.
