"Here lives a colony of Conchs, so named for the variety of shell-fish they eat. Other Conchs inhabit the Florida Keys (See Key West); both groups are of English stock. Those on the Keys are part Spanish while some of the Riviera Conchs bear evidence of Negro blood, having dark shins, kinky hair, thick lips, and heavy features. Many are descendants of English fishermen who during and after the World War left the Bahamas and settled on Singer’s Island, opposite Riviera...."
