Overview
 

Students will look at photos of Seminole doll making and read or listen to an interview with Seminole doll maker Mary B. Billie. As they listen, they will answer questions about Seminole doll making. Then they will create an artistic response.

  • Answer the question "What is role of the doll maker and and the function of the dolls in traditional Seminole culture and how is that role and function different or the same now?"
  • Create an artistic response to the Seminole dolls.

Lesson Plan
 

1. Activate prior knowledge:

  • Tell students that they are about to look at photographs of a Seminole doll maker and of Seminole dolls. They will also listen to an interview with Seminole doll maker Mary B. Billie, and have a transcript available to read. Ask the students what they know about Seminole dolls and Seminole doll making. Have they ever seen Seminole dolls at festivals or elsewhere?

  • What do they know about doll making? What materials are used? What is the process.

2. The Activity

  • Discuss what they know about Seminole dolls and doll making.
  • Make a list of questions they have about Seminole dolls and doll making.
  • Ask the question, "What is role of the doll maker and and the function of the dolls in traditional Seminole culture and how is that role and function different or the same now?"
  • Listen, look for, and record answers they find in the interview, transcript and photos of Seminole doll maker Mary B. Billie.
  • Discuss any new questions that come up in the course of examining the material.
  • Answer the question, "What is role of the doll maker and and the function of the dolls in traditional Seminole culture and how is that role and function different or the same now?"
  • Create an artistic response to the Seminole dolls.
