Silent clips: Complete Flim and Video Clip Index:

Step Four: In groups, the students will view the film clip several times to become familiar with the content.

Step Five: Groups will develop a dialogue or narrative of their choice that corresponds to the storyline of the film clip. For example: humorous, serious, dramatic… This will be considered a rough draft.

Step Six: Groups will record their dialogue on index cards.

Step Seven: Groups will then view their selected film clip once again in order to properly synchronize the dialogue to their selected clip. Review and revise dialogue as needed.

Step Eight: Groups will present their narrative to the class while the film clip plays in the background. A projected version of the film clip (LCD) would be optimal. If not available, students can view a maximized version of the clip on a computer.

EVALUATION: Grading should be based on creativity, word usage, group cooperation, thoroughness and relevance to the clip.

Extended Activity
In addition to the above activity, you may wish to incorporate the following extended activity into your curriculum. This extension of the Story Tree allows students to further develop his/her creative writing skills. This activity provides another interdiscplinary link between Language Arts and Social Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Students will use creative writing skills to establish a collaborative class story line based on information relating to a Florida Archives film clip.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • (2) Pkg. 4x6 or larger index cards
  • Empty bulletin board space, or clear area for posting story line
  • Pens/pencils
  • Computer lab, or classroom computer with Internet access and Free RealMedia Player installed.
Installation instructions for the RealMedia Player plug-in.

PROCEDURE: Students will log onto the Florida Memory Project website and select the online classroom link and view the silent film clip selected by their teacher.

The class will collaborate to write and implement an interactive adventure. Divide the class into groups of three. The teacher selects one silent film clip from the collection for the groups to preview. The teacher will create an introductory paragraph about the film clip and place it on an index card. Display the index card on the top center of a blank bulletin board. Read the paragraph aloud to the class. Ask each group to write one version of a successive paragraph relating to the film clip. The story tree now has alternate branches. Each group will write their paragraph on an index card. The teacher will collect the cards and redistribute them to different groups. Each group will silently read the paragraph that they are given. The groups will create a conclusion to the paragraph. Write the conclusion on an index card. Place all successive paragraphs and conclusions onto the bulletin board so they are linked to the original paragraph. Now you have created a story tree. Have a student read aloud a branch of the tree including the introduction, their paragraph and a conclusion.
