Burdine's Sunshine Fashions

The Teacher Resources include lesson plans and project ideas correlated to the Sunshine State Standards, additional resources, and an overview of the site as a whole.
Lesson Plans- Correlated with the Sunshine State Standards
Roxcy Bolton challenged the "men only" policies in restaurants in Jordan Marsh and Burdines Department stores.  There were separate sections set aside during lunch for men.  These men's areas received fast service because it was presumed that they needed to be able to quickly return to their important jobs, while women had time to wait.  The women, including business women, stood in long lines while there were often empty seats in the men's section.  This lesson will help students to imagine what it was like to receive segregated service in a restaurant.  They will read letters from Burdines and Jordan Marsh regarding their "men only" policies, a letter from a woman who supported Roxcy in challenging the "men only" policy, a letter from a woman who wanted to see the "men only" policy kept in place, and an essay by Molly Turner on Roxcy Bolton.
