Overview
Your students may know that restaurants at one time denied service
to customers based on race, but do they know that in 1969 many department
stores had separate lunch areas that did not allow women? In this lesson,
students will imagine being in 1969, walking into a restaurant and being
denied service. They will then try to discover why they have been denied
service.
Objectives
1. Students will listen to a guided imagery exercise that takes them
back to 1969.
2. Students will brainstorm ideas to try to discover why they would
not be allowed to sit at an empty table at a Burdines lunch counter in
1969.
3. Students will read letters about the "men only" lunch areas.
4. Students will use the information they have learned to answer
the question of why their group was not allowed to sit at the empty table
in the guided imagery exercise.
5. Students will discuss the question of whether they know of
any other time when there were similiar rules that excluded a group of
people.
6. Students will discuss whether they think anything like that
could happen today to any group of people.
