The View from the School :
A Florida State Archives Photographic Re-survey Project

Beginning in the 2002-2003 school year, the Florida State Archives has launched a pilot project to showcase student work that resurveys landscapes and themes from historic photographs. We will be working with art theacher Polly Werner.

  • Polly Werner teaches art at the Dr. N. H. Jones Elementary School; a math, science, and technology magnet school in Ocala, Florida.

Ms. Werner's 3rd grade students will research historic photographs of their communities. The photographs might come from the Florida Photographic Collection, local historical societies, or the community. Then students will revisit the locations of those historic photographs and re-photograph them as they appear today. The then-and-now photographs will be displayed side-by-side along with short essays by the students giving background information about the photos.

The Florida State Archives and Ms. Werner will work together to develop a format for displaying the photographs online, and to develop lesson plans which will also be posted on the Online Classroom.

The Florida State Archives will showcase these exhibits on the Online Classroom.
