Overview
In this lesson, students will compare the raw material of an interview with Mary McLeod Bethune to an author's first draft of a biography.

Objectives

1.  Students will hear a summary of the life of Mary Bethune.
2.  Students will read or listen to an excerpt from an interview with Mary Bethune where she describes wanting to learn to read.
3.  Students will compare the transcript (primary source) with a draft of the biography that Daniel Williams intended to publish (secondary source).
4.  Students will discuss the differences between the transcript and the draft of the biography.

Materials (Some materials are available in two formats.  Using Adobe Acrobat Reader will allow you to download scanned versions of original documents and blackline masters of forms in PDF format.  Download Adobe Acrobat Reader now.  If your computer does not support Adobe Acrobat Reader, you may download transcripts of the original documents and modified versions of forms.)
1.  Biographical information on Mary McLeod Bethune.
2. Biographical information on Daniel Williams.
3.  An excerpt from the interview with Mary Bethune where she describes wanting to read. For the complete interview, go to the Documents section of this site.

4.  Daniel Williams’ draft of the unpublished biography describing the same incident.
5.  Books about Mary McLeod Bethune (optional).
Procedure
 
1) Have students read or listen to the biographical sketch of Mary McLeod Bethune.
2) Have students think, pair, share.
3) Have students discuss these questions.  Which version do you think is closer to what actually happened?  Why do you think that?  What changes did the author make?  Why do you think he made those changes?  Do you agree with them?
