Jefferson County
Articles of agreement,
made and concluded this 30th day of January A.D. 1867 at Elbo plantation
in the County and state aforesaid between S.B. Alexander, of the
first part and the following named, Laborers, Viz. Westley Bryant,
Pinckney Bryant, Frank Bryant, Albert Bryant, Mary Bryant, Jim
Queen, Ellen Queen, Smart White, Ben White Robin White, Luvenia
Brown,
Sandy Marry, Peggy, Queen, all of the County and state aforesaid
of the second part.
Witnesseth,
That the said of the second part, for the consideration herein after
mentioned dohereby, individually, and severally, covenant, and agree,
that they will labor faithfully upon the plantation known as the
Elbo Plantation owned by the said party of the first part, in the
County and state aforesaid from the _______day of January A.D. 1867
until the twenty fifth day of December next, that during said time
they will to the best of their knowledge, skill and ability well
and faithfully, serve the said party of the first part performing
the customary Labor of plantation Laborers, such as

Tilling the soil fencing repairing Houses takeing care of the stock
prepareing the crop for market &c That they will perform the customary
labor from daylight, until sunset, with the [usual] allowance of
time for meals, and rest, and that they will not injure, any property
of any decription owned by the party of the first part, on his plantation
any property so injured, the party or Parties found Guilty will
be held responsible for the value of the same, That the party of
the second part will not leave their work without permission of
the party of the first part his agent, or superintendant
That in case of sickness, the party of the second part shall be
expected to pay the cost of rations furnished and whatever sum per
day not exceeding 50 cts fifty cents, which may be determined on
by the parties interested When ever the party of the first part
may be absent from the plantation the parties of the second part
shall yield the same obedience, and respect, to his superintendant
as would be due, the party of the first part were he actually present,
In case of the Violation of these articles or any of them without
good and sufficient cause

The party offending It shall be altogether optional with the party
of the first what course to persue in regard to them and his decision
shall be binding in all cases. And in case of disputes happening
amongst the hands, Employ[ees?] on the plantation they will leave
it to the decision of the Employer
In consideration where of, the said party of the first part, for
himself and his Executors, and administrators doth hereby covenant,
that he will furnish them as usual, with food 3 lb meat to the hand
& a peck of meal per week to the hand and houses during the time
specified and as a compensation for the faithful performance of
Labor on the plantation the said party of the first part agrees
to give the said party of the first part, One third of the cotten,
raised and housed upon the said plantation during the present year
and One third the corn housed also Fodder Peas--Potatoes They paying
One third for Bagging and Rope to Pack said cotton, And to take
care of all stock Mules Hogs Horses Cattle &c owned by the party
of the first part and order and Quiet shall be kept on the plantation
at all times. it is also agreed that Mary and Ellen, Cook and washer
on the plantation for the party of the first part

shall be Entitled to but one share, which is to be equally divided
between them in consideration of their services rendered
In testimony whereof the said parties have hereinto set their hands,
and seals this day, January 30th 1867
