Two audio cassettes.
Fussell, a rancher, was born three miles north of Polk City in a log cabin. In the interview, he discusses his family’s background in ranching and hunting; people in his community working doing roadwork for one week a year in order to pay their taxes; raising cattle and hogs; no fence laws; branding and ear marks; the introduction of new types of cattle; differences in dress between “cowboys” from the west and those in Florida; tools used in Florida ranching; cattle dogs and horses; selling and marketing cattle; and transporting cattle to market. In addition, he also talks about the foods they ate while traveling such as smoked bacon and sweet potatoes; ways in which they entertained themselves including music, frolics, and square dancing; and his views on hunting and conservation.
Two selections from the interview with rancher Harris Fussell are available
on the Occupational
Groups section of the Folklife audio page. |

Folklife Database
Search this database for descriptions of photographs and audio recordings from
the Florida Folklife Collection available at the State Archives of Florida. Approximately
46,000 photographic images and approximately 5,000 audio recordings are cataloged.
Contact the Archives to order images and recordings.

Because many of the original recordings are in a fragile condition, patrons
will only be permitted to use digital copies of those recordings. However,
the digitization project is still in progress, and therefore some recordings
may not yet be available. Please contact
us ahead of time to ensure availability.
