General Note/Comment Field Three reel to reel recordings. (Also copied onto cassette: C86-120, C86-123, Box 20, in S 1576) Images are of a Mexican American mariachi band practicing in Francisco Rodriques's house. Also includes interviews with director Rodriguez and player Lopez. Mariachi bands, which began in the Mexican state of Jalisco, were often employed to play at special events. Full bands include trumpets, violins, and guitars. The Metro-Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.

"Camilia la Tejana" performed by Mariachi Jalisco is available on the Latin Music page.
